News Media Friend or Foe?

This week's readings were about the media. The media is portrayed as an unbiased source of news that helps citizens stay informed and be educated in the dealings of their country. This however is not accurate. Haerman and Chomsky specifically go into how the media's structure has set it up for failure in being an accurate unbiased source of current events. Media requires profits. Profits come from advertisers. The majority of advertisers are large corporation who will not advertise with media they feel 'don't support their product or image. I think this is a slightly pesemistic but accruate depictin of news media today. I find this interesting because this is an issue the LWV seems to ignore. Their organization tackles a wide variety of issues; with a large underlying theme of transparency and voter education. Doing a quick search of their news, media, and blog database I could not find a single article touching on the issue of media bias. They seem to be an organization that actually champions the media. They themselves draft news stroies. While they harp on big business contributions they seem never to tie them to new media. Perhaps this would threaten their claim to nonpartisanship? Don't throw your partners under the bus perhaps?
