The beginning...

So I thought it only appropriate to begin my blog with a short historical rundown of The League of Women Voters.
The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization designed to spread political knowledge and encourage participation in government. It was founded in 1920 by Carrie Chapman Catt. Mrs.Catt was a prominent leader in the women's suffrage movement of the 1900's. She started the League of Women Voters after the last meeting of the National American Women Suffrage Association. Its founding came six months before the 19th Amendment was signed into the Constitution.
The league was originally developed as an organization to help women take advantage of their new found rights in government. Until 1973, the league was a 'woman only' organization.
Since its beginning, the league has had a strict non-partisan policy. Members feel it allows the organization to succeed throughout the changing tides of partisanship in America. However, they do encourage members to find political parties that align with their ideals. Don't get them wrong they are very intertwined with political parties. The league endorses candidates, supports bills, and gives their opinion on parties freely. This is done however with a great effort to be non -bias. They support people and initiatives from both the left, the right, ans the middle.
Today, the league holds true to its roots. It focuses on voter education, constitutional rights, and improving government processes. It boasts over 150,000 members and enacts real change in American government.
